Brass Pipe Fittings: The Basics that You Should Know

In a plumbing system, several pipes and tubing sections are required to be connected to each other for the system to work efficiently. This purpose is fulfilled by pipe fittings, which are specially designed for connecting straight pipe sections, as well as joining with pipes of different shapes and sizes.

There are vast varieties of pipe fittings used today. Different types of fitting are required based on the application for which they are to be used. These fittings are manufactured from a variety of materials, such as brass, stainless steel, aluminum, steel, alloy steel, plastic, etc.  Every fitting made from a different material has its own set of properties, features, and benefits. In this post, we will discuss the basics of brass pipe fittings.

What are the Different Processes Involved in the Production of Brass Pipe Fittings?

There are a number of processes involved in manufacturing high-quality brass pipe fittings. The following are the most common processes involved in their production:

  1. Evaporative Pattern Casting: As the name suggests, evaporative technology is used in this casting process.
  2. Centrifugal Casting: This type of casting technique is most common in manufacturing thin-walled cylinders. The centrifugal casting process is also referred as a rotocasting process.
  3. Continuous Casting: In this casting process, the molten metals are solidified which helps them get a final finish. The continuous casting process is also referred to as strand casting.
  4. Die Casting: This is another metal casting process. In this process, the molten metal under high pressure is passed through a mold.

What are the Components Required for Brass Pipe Fittings?

Brass pipe fittings make use of a number of components. What are these components? Read on to know:

  1. Coupling: Couplings are the components that are used to connect two pipes. You can get these components in different lengths and sizes.
  2. Nipple: Nipple is basically a stub of a pipe. It is used to connect two fittings and is most commonly used for plumbing solutions. This component is made from copper or chlorinated polyvinyl chloride.
  3. Tee: Tee is yet another vital pipe fitting component, which is used to deliver a steady flow of any liquid.
  4. Reducer: When you want to connect two pipes having dissimilar widths. In that case, a reducer is used.
  5. Elbow: This component has a shape of a human elbow. It is used to change the direction of a pipe by 45° or 90°.
  6. Cross: As the name suggests, this component has a cross shapes, with four branches in opposite directions. One out of the four crosses is used as an inlet, whereas the remaining three branches are used as outlets.
  7. Union: During maintenance, fixture, or replacement, the pipes are required to be disconnected. There is a component for this purpose, too. A union is a component used to disconnect pipes, whenever required for the aforementioned purposes.

This was the basic information that you should have about brass pipe fittings. In the upcoming post, we will discuss several benefits of these fittings in detail.
